FIVE - Congrats to Guerilla

Can it be? Guerilla Magazine is 5 years old?! Back somewhere near the beginning, Tony Martins, asked to feature my Polaroid transfer work along with a wonderfully written article called "When Nude and Food Become Narrative". Because of being involved with the magazine, Tony contacted me to be part of a retrospective exhibit at OAG, The Ottawa Art Gallery. I have enjoyed many exhibits there, and once had a duo exhibit "brown & pink is the NEW black & white" in the theatre upstairs, with my friend, fellow photographer, Angela Marklew, as part of the Ottawa Fringe Festival.. I have never shown in the main gallery so I am excited about it. I wish I could be there. As the invite above states, the event is on September 3rd. The pieces that I will have on exhibit are:

Ottawa Where Magazine Feature

I was shocked and pleased to be approached by Where Magazine in Ottawa about my current show, Wanderlust at the D'OMMA Gallery. First I was contacted to have the show listed in their gallery listings online. Then, I was contacted to be featured in the two page spread of the current print issue under "Hot Art". NICE! The write up and photo turned out really well. Thanks, Where Magazine!

RESPITE

Well, I guess I am a bit behind because while I had been posting each piece in my Wanderlust Series to my online Create A Day group, I was not posting them here. So, in an effort to blog a bit more about our recent visit to Ottawa, where I helped to hang the Wanderlust show at the D'OMMA Gallery I have decided to post the other eight pieces in the show. I was interviewed by Mitchell Caplan for the CHUO-FM89 show Click Here on Tuesday, which went really well. I am hoping I will be able to post the audio file here but am waiting to find that out. Anyway, please grab a cup of joe and enjoy my newest mixed media work. It is my hope that you will be able to view each piece and to travel to another place.

Click Here Radio Program TOMORROW

I just got off the phone with Mitchell Caplan, the host of Click Here, an interview based radio show on CHUO-FM89, that focuses on the arts and community issues in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He has a spot on his program tomorrow, and he would like me be his guest. We will talk about Wanderlust, the show I currently have up at D'OMMA Gallery. I have been on his program before, I think it was back in 2005, for the Red Salon Artists first show. Mitchell has a great voice and is very good at what he does. I am excited to speak with him again. I didn't ask him how he heard about the show. I have not had time to do much PR but I did send an announcement to Art Engine in Ottawa yesterday, I am glad I did. Back from Ottawa...

...and a side trip to Maine. It was an awesome trip! I didn't do a whole lot of relaxing, not that I even know how. I had 16 photo sessions with past clients. It was really nice to see everyone and I even had one new client thanks to word of mouth from a couple clients. Nothing beats word of mouth. Thanks guys! It rained a part of every day that we were in Ottawa. It has been that kind of summer. I only had to reschedule one session on account of rain, which is amazing.

Quin and Andre got to spend lots of quality time with family while I was off working and seeing friends, and I did get to see family, too. They were quite understanding about my absences, what with the new house and new carpet, paint, etc to pay for.


I hope to have a chance in coming days to post about the highlights of the trip. I will start with a trip to my good friend, Karina Bergman's studio.





I was lucky to see Karina twice on the trip, which was not enough, but I am happy to see her new space to create. I guess I should say new to me, since she has been there for over a year now. Karina works mainly in fiber and performance art.



She also does some great sidewalk drawings at festivals and such. She is a great friend and truly understands where I am coming from when it comes to art issues. Actually, I am thankful to be surrounded by many talented artist friends. Here are some images from Karina's studio. Thanks for the visits, Karina, I miss ya!

Wanderlust

This is the first mixed media piece in my series called Wanderlust, which is a solo show I am having at Ottawa Gallery D'OMMA in August. I also got the artist statement written today...

Artist's Statement for Wanderlust:

Long before talk of fossil fuels and the environmental footprint of travel dominated the news, people have had the need to explore their surroundings and beyond. This wanderlust is practical for some, while for others it is about adventure, curiosity, and a need to have new experiences. The reason that people travel, both now and in the past, are many. I seek to explore these reasons in my newest body of mixed media work. Using recycled materials, including Polaroid transfers made for past exhibitions, I have created a series of collages on 12 1/4" by 12 1/4" thrifted record album jackets. As someone who suffers from a serious need to roam and to learn new things, the concept of wanderlust appeals to me. As someone who is currently grappling with the present state of our world and how best to explore it while keeping my enviromental impact to a minimum, I am presenting an alternative to actual travel for the viewer. My hope is that these works will provide you with a green way to wander, by using your imagination in collaboration with my visuals.

Well, Its About Time...

... for the rain to stop. It has been raining since last Wednesday (it is Monday today). I woke up to the sound of raindrops and a wet world but then it cleared up. I almost didn't believe it.

And, it is about time that I FINALLY put up my bio and some images on the OMMA (Ottawa Mixed Media Artists) site. I have been a member for 4 or 5 years. I wish time grew on trees. I was prompted to finally do this simple things, when I received an email from the new listings editor at Where magazine. I will be the featured artist for the month of August, at the d'OMMA Gallery, in Ottawa, and she needed images of my work. When she stated that she could not find anything about me on the site, I knew it was time to check that off the list. Here my images album . Feels good.

Awesome Opening

I am so bummed that I had to miss the opening of The Blue Period by Red Salon but am so pleased to hear there was an amazing turn out. France-Marie was super sweet to insist that the group photo be taken in front of my work, so I could be there somehow. I was there in spirit as I thought of them all evening.



Patrick, Mary, and the rest of the crew did an amazing job of framing and hanging the work, putting together the show, and all the PR. They were great to work with and we appreciate it. Thanks, guys! And thanks, Mary, for these pics. You can see more on her web album.

Red Salon's Blue Period

Ok, I knew it had been awhile, but, I didn't think it had been two weeks! Wow, so much has been going on but how would you know? I plan to do some catch up in the coming days. Coming soon: photos and stories from our Minneapolis visit, Quin's 1st birthday, news from sewing class, and a couple of fun visitors...


On a more immediate note, tomorrow night is the opening of this year's Red Salon Artists show in Ottawa (where does the time go, I thought it was forever away when we made the plans!!!). This lovely group of talented women have allowed me to stay on as a Red Salon Artist, even though I moved to Banff. Thanks, Ladies!! Red Salon was started to create more opportunities to exhibit work in Ottawa. It is a nomadic event that has not always taken place in typical art spaces. The first year we took over the halls of a Medical Arts Building. The second year we were at Cube Gallery. Last year we took a year off. And this year we are exhibiting at Patrick Gordon Framing. I sent 6 Polaroid transfers to the show, which were expertly framed by Patrick (I am DYING to see pics!!). We have not worked with a theme in mind in the past but as inspiration for this show we decided to create works for our "Blue Period". The vernissage is from 7-10 PM tomorrow, May 23rd.
