Safe Cosmetics

I am not one to have really sensitive skin when it comes to make up, so it took me until now to really think about using the best products on my face. There are so many cosmetics out there that you might think are safe, but are actually pretty toxic. I have been using organic lotions, soaps, shampoos, and such for a couple of years. Now it is time to chuck the bad make up. Lipsticks, nail polish, and shampoo, are actually on the list as one of the ten toxic items you should know about in this post. So, how do you know if your current make up is actually bad for you? You can research it on Skin Deep: Cosmetics Database. There are 41,000 products in this database which are paired against 50 toxicity and regulatory databases. It is a project that is run by the people at Environmental Working Group.

Additionally, here are 5 chemicals to avoid in cosmetic products and why you should avoid them. Quickly, they are the Phthatale Family, Lauryl Sulfate, the Amine Family, Formaldehyde, and Paraben Preservatives. There are many resources online to help you clean up your make up drawer. You can also go to a local natural foods store, see what they have available, and talk with a real live person about what might be best for you.

Natural Makeup - Dr. Hauschka

I have been wanting to switch over to natural makeup for some time. I have been using loose mineral foundation for awhile but have not settled on one in particular to stick with. I was buying from a single mom on Etsy who was selling make up and some items made by her autistic son but she is no longer running her shop.

I had heard that mascara is one of the hardest items to find made naturally. I went to my local health store, Weeds and Seeds, and Dr. Hauschka products were recommended. I decide to try one of the mascaras that was on sale, and I think it was about $25. I held onto it until my usual brand was gone, and have now been using Dr. Hauschka's for several weeks. I love it. I have never used mascara that I need to use makeup remover to get off. I want to be able to wash my face and to have the mascara come off. The old unnatural brand I have used for 15 years required soap and water to remove it, which is better than a whole other makeup remover, but is drying to the skin around my eyes. Dr. Hauschka's washes off completely with water which is awesome. It doesn't flake off during the day but I do find it kind of fades. It could stand to be reapplied. And in the heat and humidity I am in while visiting friends and family in Eastern Canada, it does run a bit, but where I live in Western Canada it stays put.

Here is a bit more info on Mascara Intermezzo:

- Available in black, brown and blue
- Thickens and enhances lashes. Imparts a silky, lush and vital color as it helps to strengthen lashes over time.
- Opthalmologically tested
- Neem leaf extract strengthens keratin to encourage strong, full growth
- Antioxidant-rich eyebright and black tea extracts soothe the sensitive eye area
- Gentle and soothing to the allergy-prone eye area

Here is the mission statement of the company which is another reason why I want to buy from them:
"Dr.Hauschka Skin Care is a different kind of company. Inspired by our vision of a culture of care, we've created a company not driven by greed but powered by compassion. All we do is in the interest of fostering well-being in the world, from our ecologically sound methods of growing and sourcing ingredients to our one-of-a-kind manufacturing processes and international fair trade initiatives.

We're active in our local communities and engage in projects the world over that help transform disadvantage into self-reliance and economic sustainability.

We're thankful that our company continues to grow, and that Dr.Hauschka Skin Care is gaining new devotees every day. The more we connect with others, the better we're able to effect positive change. Ultimately, we gauge our success by the difference we're able to make for individuals, communities and the world we share."
