Mad About Buttons - A Craft Cafe for the Button Crazed

{Pretty Buttons}
 Last night's Craft Cafe was awesome! It was on a Thursday evening, which turns out didn't work very well for our regulars, but we had some new ladies and some repeat crafters, for a total of five. Turns out, for this first go with the button necklace, it was the perfect amount of people for Sheena and I to help, and to also get some of our own crafting done. We demonstrated how to do a simple stitched necklace and a more complicated two needle style which ends up looking like the buttons were run through a sewing machine, then we turned everyone loose to let the fun ensue. Amid sips of tea and coffee, everyone chatted and created, in the cozy Wild Flour. This was the first time in a long while that the sun went down while we were there, which means winter is coming. My favourite parts of the evening, are when Chloe struck out on her own, as a renegade crafter, creating her own style (with the engineering help of Kristy) of elastic bracalet, and when a girl named Maggie, who happened to be passing by outside, looked in, saw what we were doing, came in, exclaimed, "I love making button necklaces" and pulled one out of her purse!

 Maggie, a girl after out own heart. Not only does she make buttons necklaces, she had one in her bag when she randomly walked by Craft Cafe, so she came in to show us!

 Have you met Sheena, she loves to ham it up...

 I always photograph Sheena at least once, while she is photographing something, as a general rule...

It's That Time AGAIN... Time for Thing-A-Day!!!

That's right everyone! I am signing up for my THIRD year of Thing-A-Day, a month-long creative extravaganza that takes place every February. I was first alerted to TAD by my friend, Robyn, of Inspiration Junkie. I have been thanking her ever since! I have met many other creative people through TAD, and it helps me to focus on being creative and documenting it daily for a whole month. It may sound like a huge undertaking, but you are really just supposed to spend about 20 minutes a day doing something creative for TAD. So, you can work on a piece of art for that time, then document it, then do it again the next day, on and on, until it is done. Or you can create something for your dinner and document that. There are not really any rules or anyone who can hold you to creating each day, other than yourself. Don't be shy, don't be scared (I have two small children and I am not afraid...) just jump right in! And let me know how it goes... See you around the Posterous site where I can read about all of your creations and adventures!

Environmental Art I created for the 2010 Thing-A-Day

If you would like to see what I did each day in previous years, just go into my blog archive for February 2009 and 2010...

Raising Money for the Banff Community Greenhouse

On Wednesday we held a fundraiser for the Banff Community Greenhouse. I am on the committee and this fundraiser was the culmination of many meetings and lots of effort. And it was flawless! It was held at the Banff Legion. The weather was AMAZING and all the hot mamas in town showed up in their little sundresses. There was Crazy Larry, our local balloon animal guy and kid favorite. There was tons of food from tons of local restaurants, for $5 a plate, along with organic beef burgers on the patio for $2 each. There were many generous silent auction donations from 12 cupcakes from Cozy Cave Bakehouse to a gorgeous mosaic entitled "I Chose to Grow" by my amazing friend, Cindy Gibson, to a four person VIP ski day at Mount Norquay to a 3 day $5,000 heliskiing package from CMH (if I had a list of everything I would mention it all). There was a drawing for one of the greenhouse spaces. And a worm composting demonstration for adults, along with one for kids that involved gummy worms, oreo cookie dirt, and chopsticks. There was a garden talk by a local arborist. There were tunes spun by a local DJ. And there was me, at the craft table, over seeing tons of kiddos designing, cutting, gluing, and coloring everything from terracotta pots to collages to garden themed coloring sheets. And did I mention, there were balloons! And that at last count we had made more than $8,000!! For more on the greenhouse, I will include all the details after our next meeting...
